Hazeltonian Summer 2013

The Hazeltonian,

My Purpose, my passion: To Inspire -- And So It Is!

So Much Change! Isn’t that what I always say?

For those who don’t know, I moved to Atlanta last fall. That little voice said: If you don’t try, you won’t know…, then echoed that phrase if you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got! Better transit, many more sidewalks, pedestrian friendly! Never saw the likes of either in Florida.

Living in Virginia Highlands, a fabulous neighborhood, I’m amazed at the many benefits thus far. Neighbors who are friendly and helpful! I got my broken computer desk replaced by someone just two doors down! Neighbors across the street checked on and fed cat Chippies when I was away! My neighbor in the other half of the duplex is such a neat guy and a hoot! There’s a Next Door E list, filled with announcements and opportunities to network. That’s how I got my new desk!

I’ve reunited with some folks from my graduate school in Carrollton, West Ga. University, (one of the oldest psych dept. programs in humanistic psych. It’s still going strong! I had lunch one day with my friend Dr. Anne Richards, once a student of Abraham Maslow! What a grand opportunity, to look back and appreciate having studied with such a fine program that is less than an hour away! I’m looking forward to spending some time with them when we can. It’s amazing to look back to 1977, and appreciate how even then, it was common for me to follow my passion, moving to a foreign area, not knowing anyone, that humanistic psych and New Thought spirituality have remained cornerstones to my work and personal life.

Would you believe, in a round-about way, I got reconnected with a friend from seventh grade! Jana Jopson: http://justyouimagine.com - living just 20 minutes from me, we have oodles in common, personally and professionally. She was a gem back then and voila, surely is an even greater treasure today! Wow!

The Georgia AMTA was kind enough to help me through the application to obtain my massage license, and generously granted me my first year of membership with them! What wonderful people! I can’t wait to spend more time with them! (Actually, I did recently. They’re so comfortable to work with, it’s as if we’ve known each other for years.) Still looking for more avenues for chair massage and to build my practice. Are you in or near to the Atlanta area? In a city I’d like to visit? Arrange a Wellness Day for your group with me!

A local agency, CVI, found me a couple of volunteers! What angels! One became an especially close friend, who has moved with her husband, (darn), (we’ll stay in touch – the world is so small!) Her sister and wonderful family are all part of my life now too. The other volunteer, she and her boyfriend both, are also fun and have been incredibly helpful! The good these people have brought stretch far beyond anything I could have imagined, and I am humbly appreciated of them and CVI. Incidentally, CVI has a weekly e newsletter, something else I never saw in Fl. One thing that has helped to keep me afloat for several months here are several research studies where I was paid to participate. Many of these ads were found in the weekly CVI newsletter.

From My Writings:

The Expression of Spirit Cannot Contain Itself!

Years ago when I got ordained, I mentioned my guide dog Lyndi was my minister. So when I got Daisy, I said “This one isn’t my minister, this one is God.” We all are expressions of God, and so my current guide dog continues to demonstrate…

Boundless Joy!

She cannot contain herself at the slightest possibility! Exuberance, eagerness to play, to enjoy! She’s ready! Joy is her/our natural state! Do you believe this? Some say “Well, I can’t be joyous all the time.”  Really? Why not read “The Happiness Project” by Gretchen Rubin. To me joy doesn’t mean feeling “glad” about every circumstance, though it’s bringing a sense of well-being, positive expectancy into any given moment. Yeah!

I make the slightest move, from my chair, from any room - Meghan’s up, eager and ready! “What can I do for you?” “Are you ready to enjoy me, use me?”

Remind you of anyone? Any presence/energy you’ve felt? Something outside your sense of what you believe you’re worth?

When I’m not responding in kind, or even as kindly, not matching her joy, she patiently waits, until a moment when I’m more receptive and available.

And so, in my life, comes the outpouring of good, surprises…, gifts, helpfulness, new friendships, new clients, new ideas… And when I’m not receptive? Good finds its way to me again in another opportune moment. Dare I say, good constantly must go to where it meets with receptivity. Though my dog is trained and remains contained, Spirit absolutely must express itself. Why not joyously to and through you and me, as well as through all of the abundance of good there for us to receive?

And so it is!

Cookin’ With Deb!

Its summer, so lots of fruit with plain yogurt for breakfast, salads with greens and goat cheese, and maybe a piece of grilled fish. I find myself eating most mid-day, lighter in the evening, less hungry. Learning more about the many gluten free items out there. My hunch is many of mine and the health challenges of others could be greatly lessened by eating gluten free. By the way, if you haven’t read: “Salt, Sugar, Fat” by Michael Moss I highly suggest it.
